A guide to support families of FIFO parents.

At Kids In The Middle, we understand that family change can raise many questions. Below, you’ll find answers to our most common enquiries about how we support children, parents, schools, and workplaces through separation and transition.

1. What is Kids In The Middle?

Kids In The Middle is an Australian child-focused service supporting children, parents, and professionals through family separation and change. We give children a safe voice in the process, helping families communicate better, reduce conflict, and prioritise wellbeing at home, at school, and in the community.

A child consultation gives children a private, supportive space to express their feelings and experiences. Using gentle conversation, art, or play-based activities, the child can share what’s important to them. With parental consent, the consultant summarises this information in a neutral, child-safe way to assist Family Dispute Resolution Practitioners (FDRPs), schools, or parents in creating plans that reflect the child’s needs.

Yes. In most cases, both parents are encouraged to be involved. We may meet with parents individually first to understand family dynamics, and then work together to support the child’s voice in a balanced and respectful way. Our focus is always the child’s safety and emotional wellbeing — not taking sides.

Schools can register to implement the Safe Steps School Handover Support Program — a structured, trauma-informed approach to managing handovers between separated parents. Schools receive access to resources, training, printable tools, and professional development options to support staff, students, and families. Participation helps create calm, child-friendly transitions and builds a culture of understanding and inclusion.

The Kids In The Middle ESP helps employers support staff navigating family separation or shared parenting challenges. It includes confidential consultations, resources for families, and training for HR or managers. For industries like FIFO, education, and healthcare, the ESP improves wellbeing and productivity by ensuring staff feel supported both at work and at home. Businesses can partner with Kids In The Middle through annual subscriptions or session-based packages.

Absolutely. We understand the unique challenges faced by FIFO parents and children, especially when family separation is involved. Our FIFO resources and eBooks help parents maintain meaningful connections with their children while away at work — through shared activities, communication ideas, and emotional connection strategies.

You can contact us directly through the website www.kidsinthemiddle.au to book a free 30-minute introductory consultation. Schools, businesses, and professionals can also enquire about program partnerships and tailored training options.

Yes. All sessions and consultations are strictly confidential and conducted with parental consent. Information shared by children is treated sensitively and only summarised in a neutral, child-safe way for use by parents or professionals involved in the child’s care.

Every family, school, and business is different — and Kids In The Middle meets people where they are. Whether it’s helping children find their voice, guiding parents toward calmer co-parenting, or supporting workplaces through family transitions, we’re here to create safer, more connected futures for children.
